America’s biggest mistake may be its total rejection of what a common sense portion should be.  Extra large, double size, jumbo and giant should not be words that describe the size of your dinner!  A good rule of thumb for determining an adequate portion size is to look at the size of your fist or the size of your palm.  Anything bigger is just too much.
  • Keep it Regular.  Make sure you are eating the same number of meals every day at about the same time.  Skipping meals is bad news because it destroys your body’s metabolism.  Whether you are eating three, four, or six meals a day, plan carefully to eat them at the same time.
  • Know Your Guilty Pleasures.  Everyone has that special food that they just can’t say no to, and that is perfectly ok.  If you are an ice cream lover or a chocoholic, or if you devour pretzels or crave potato chips, that’s fine.  But be aware!  Eat these guilty pleasures in moderation; if it becomes a problem, evaluate whether there is a deeper issue beneath your bad eating habits.
  • Change Slowly. You aren’t going to drop one hundred pounds overnight.  Think of these tips as a gradual, lifelong change for the better.  Anything too sudden, and you’ll end up going back to your old way.
